What Is Checked in an MOT?
An MOT checks that your car meets the legal road safety and environmental standards. The test covers areas including:
- Lights, indicators and reflectors
- Brakes, steering and suspension
- Tyres and wheels, including tread depth
- Seatbelts and seats
- Windscreen, wipers and washers, mirrors and horn
- Exhaust system and emissions
- Body structure, doors, fuel system and registration plates
The MOT doesn't check the condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox — that's what a service is for.
Before You Bring Your Car In
- Check every light works, including the number plate light.
- Make sure your tyres have at least 1.6mm of tread.
- Top up your screen wash and check your wipers clear the screen.
- If a warning light is on, mention it when you book — we can diagnose the fault.
When Is Your MOT Due?
Most cars need their first MOT three years after registration, then every year. You can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before your current certificate runs out and keep the same renewal date. Check your due date and MOT history on GOV.UK.
